How far do you have to go: to see the morning sun
And the shadow retreating towards you from the far side of the canal,
To see the busy ducklings trying to keep up with mum gliding ahead
Or to see the heron’s flight?
How far do you have to go to find an easy seat in a tidy garden?
Is that a squirrel clinging to the bark
and straining his neck to see what you are up to?
How far to hear birdsong, the rustle of branches in the churchyard?
Look for the reflection of the last red rays of light disappearing under the bridge
And wait for the tranquil night to follow the calm day.
How far? Not far at all.
